Permafrost designs limited edition wooden toy for group exhibition

Permafrost designs limited edition wooden toy for group exhibition

Permafrost has designed and manufactured a limited edition of wooden toy cars for the group exhibition 100SERIE, opening today in Grünerløkka, Oslo. 100 numbered pieces are released for sale at the venue.

100SERIE is an invitational project, showing work from 5 different Norwegian design studios. The exhibition offers a look into the process of shaping and manufacturing modern, mass-produced consumer goods.

The 100 RACER wooden toy car by Permafrost is a tribute to modern car manufacturing. Neither futuristic nor retro, the 100 RACER is inspired by the rational simplicity of an aerodynamic race car.

100SERIE is open from May 8th – May 15th, @Is It So Collective, Øvrefoss 14, Oslo.

Participating design studios: Eggs, Heydays, Gridy, Permafrost, Fimbul.

Permafrost’s online store now open

Permafrost’s online store now open

We are happy to announce that our online store is finally open!

Named stories by permafrost, the store offers a complete collection of our Offshore, Archipelago and Shipping sets of wooden toys. The toys are available for pre-order, with deliveries starting December 1st.

stories by permafrost is a collection of iconic design objects, conceived, developed and produced by Norwegian designers Permafrost. All the objects in the stories by permafrost collection have been created for different international design exhibitions, and as prototypes they have been displayed in places like Milan, London, New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo.

After more than a decade of creating conceptual, inventive and fun products for exhibitions all over the world, we have a large assembly of unique prototypes and one-of-a-kind objects. The stories by permafrost project started when we realised, we love some of these ideas too much to just let them gather dust in the attic. Like proud parents, we think they deserve to be part of the real world, finding a place in the homes and lives of real people.

Permafrost presents new toys at 100% Norway during the London Design Festival

Permafrost presents new toys at 100% Norway during the London Design Festival

Permafrost has been selected to take part in the 100% Norway show during the upcoming London Design Festival. We are displaying a collection of wooden toys building on the theme of our “Offshore” wooden toys from last year’s New Nordic Identity exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Alongside the “Offshore” set, we will be launching two new sets of wooden toys called “Shipping” and “Archipelago”. All of the toys will be released commercially in our Stories by Permafrost collection.

Behind their cute, harmless appearance, the toys are perhaps posing some silent questions about Norway’s national identity and industrial heritage.

Furthermore, the project has been an exercise in simplifying and refining the shape and construction of the products. Just how much can we remove and still let the toys retain their distinct personalities?

100% Norway is the official, Norwegian design exhibition hosted by The Norwegian Design Council, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London. This year’s event marks the 10th anniversary 100% Norway show.

If in London, come see us at the Dray Walk Gallery, Dray Walk (off Brick Lane/Hanbury Street), London. The show is open from 19 – 22 September.

Wooden toys at the Louisiana

Wooden toys at the Louisiana

Is there a Nordic identity? Does The Nordic Way exist? Can one, despite the tendency of globalization to erase national and cultural differences, still understand identity as something associated with particular places? And if that is the case, how has the Nordic identity developed alongside the development of the rest of the world?

These are some of the questions posed by the New Nordic – Architecture and Identity exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

Permafrost has been asked to create one of 30 small ‘Nordic dioramas’ in the exhibition, reflecting on Nordic identity in relation to our own cultural profession. Our contribution is a set of wooden toys depicting modern day industrial icons, while at the same time honouring traditional Nordic craftsmanship. The exhibition is open until October 21st, so anyone in or around Copenhagen could do worse than checking it out.
